Yeah, double glazing etc. People who call just about products without caring who is at the other end as it is just another number on their list hence a 'cold caller'

I know people who do it to make ends meet... not pretty!

Not all that silly, because there's that new K-glass stuff or whatever its called that your windows may or may not be made out of. Interesting eh?

>I know people who do it to make ends meet... not pretty!

You know it! People who work at those call centres have to clock out to go for a sh1t, and then clock in again. So they don't get paid for time on the loo and the bosses can find out who's spending the longest curling them out. Also, the boss may occasionally walk in and stand on a table and tell everyone their not having lunch today unless they reach a near impossible target. Bastards.

You think taking a cold call was tough, just think how tough it is to phone hundreds of people a day with the exact same sales pitch knowing that 99% of them will basically reply with a polite or not so polite version of 'no,f**k off, i don't want double f**king glazing'
and the worst thing as carl points out is that these people get paid very little for this while their bosses just sit around and do nothing anfd get paid twice as much

well people shouldn't do the job then-everyone knows it's a pants job that only pays well when u meet the high targets and it's rubbish to be on the phone to grumpy people all day......they know this b4 they join up, so why do they do it......surely nobody can be this desperate

surely someone has to sell double glazing, its a tough job, we should respect everyone who works hard for a living at low-medium income
whatever you do for your job is your bread, there are plenty of jobs that are nasty but someone has to do them, thats how society works, these people are working to feed their families or fund their education etc

Therefore i think everyone should be paid the same, your work is your bread in society; doctor, teacher, bricklayer, lawyer, environmental engineer whatever

ok. we all know john is wrong, but lets just ignore that staement so we don't ahve to endure a long argument.

so anyway, i worked selling windows to people. it was great fun. we used the phones to make long distance phone calls. we did 3 hour shifts and very little work. then we all left because our boss was sacked.

making ends meet...what....

what do you mean silly girl - mainly students work in call centres!!!

call centre work is really highly paid (for the work) around near me, its about £10 p.h. + commision - that is not bad, for sitting on your arse all day, just phoning people - yeah - its quite stressfull, and hard to make sales - but still not bad.

and also - alot of companies in the UK are now starting to move thier call centres to india (and similar countries) where the job is one of THE most highly paid jobs around!!!

[sorry i'm really tired - shoot me if i've read and commented about any of this wrong!]

no, james, you're definitely right on the first point. call centres pay a lot for their staff, because it's so hard to find people willing to sit at a telephone all day. my friend did it last summer. he earned lOads.
but still a silly girl. and being a student doesn't exempt her from being silly james, you should know...

Moving call centres to India? That surely doesn't make any sense because the moeny they would save on wages would be replaced by the cost of all the calls to the UK. Unless they're selling in India but I imagine the demand for double glazing in India really isn't very high.

Oh yeah, and I like the way Colin keeps mentioning chatting in a pub over a pint. Very few people seem to want to do that kind of thing which is a shame really. You can't beat a pint, a packet of peanuts, an oldy world pub, and a good debate.

I didn't know you offered... where was that?

I've been busy working all week. I may go out tonight, it depends where everyone is going. Can't really be arsed with anything too loud or expensive. I sound like an old fart now, but I'm just feeling a bit lazy today.
